SpacesShared, an online platform — and a team of people — that matches students who are looking for safe and affordable homesharing with older adult hosts has made massive gains across Canada to start 2024.“We are proud to work with our partners to help young people succeed,” said Rylan Kinnon, CEO SpacesShared. “For young people, safe, affordable housing is directly related to success in postsecondary studies and, ultimately, success beyond school in the workforce. Preparing the future workforce is critical to building a strong economy for everyone .”As postsecondary schools get to know SpacesShared, they are eager to partner to provide students with another option for safe, affordable housing. Older adult hosts benefit by turning a spare room into extra income, meaningfully giving back to their communities, and having an extra set of hands to help with chores or tasks. SpacesShared and its postsecondary school partners are working together to tackle some of the most pressing issues of our time: affordable student housing, aging in place, and loneliness.SpacesShared has signed Memorandums of Understanding with 14 schools in Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador, and will be announcing partnerships in two other provinces in the coming months. January alone saw partnerships increase 250 percent, with all the major postsecondary school in Newfoundland and Labrador signed up, as well as five additional schools across Ontario. Here is the complete list of partnership launches, to date:OntarioGeorgian College,Humber College,Wilfrid Laurier University,Sheridan College,Nipissing University,St. Lawrence College,University of Niagara Falls Canada,Niagara College Canada, and more.Newfoundland and LabradorAcademy Canada,College of the North Atlantic,Keyin College,DieTrac Technical Institute and more.Alongside partnerships with institutions, SpacesShared is also seeking strategic partnerships with postsecondary-related organizations. The organization has formed a significant collaboration with guard.me International Insurance, Canada's leading health insurance provider for international students. This partnership aims to enhance the safety and sustainability of the platform. SpacesShared has also collaborated with the charity organization Helping International Students, with the goal of mobilizing more hosts to support the growing demand of international students.“Postsecondary schools are important members of their communities,” said Jackie Tanner, Chief Experience Officer SpacesShared. “We want to thank them, as well as all of the incredible hosts and potential hosts we’ve had the chance to meet with as we’ve been touring these campuses and communities. This is one way we can move forward on the important issues of housing, affordability, loneliness, and aging in place together.”Become a host:SpacesShared invites older adults living near Canadian postsecondary campuses to become part of this important program. Older adults with available space are encouraged to sign up and help students secure a comfortable living environment while benefiting from the joy of intergenerational homesharing.About SpacesSharedSpacesShared is a homesharing technology platform that empowers two key groups to meet each other: older adults and students. Launched in 2023, SpacesShared is responding to the Canadian housing crisis with a solution prioritizing connection, comfort, and community. Students looking for a safe, affordable place to stay can now quickly and affordably connect with older adult hosts who would like some extra income, help around the house, and an opportunity to give back. The platform is entirely self-contained from application, to agreement, rent and relationship management on its website. It’s a new way to honour an old tradition: opening our homes to people and experiences that enrich our lives and communities. For more information about homesharing through SpacesShared, or to register for a free account as a host or a student, visit spacesshared.ca.
