The Canadian School Year

How Canadian post-secondary semesters and breaks line up — useful context for hosts thinking about agreement length.

The Canadian post-secondary school year typically follows a similar structure across most institutions, although there can be slight variations depending on the specific university or college. The academic year is divided into three main semesters: Fall, Winter, and Summer.

Fall Semester (September – December)

The Fall semester marks the beginning of the academic year and usually starts in early September. It is a time when students return to campus after the summer break. The Fall semester is around 12 to 13 weeks (about 3 months) in duration. The semester concludes with final exams, projects, and assignments usually taking place in December, right before the winter break.

Winter Semester (January – April)

The Winter semester typically starts in early January. Students return from their winter break to continue their studies. This semester also lasts around 12 to 13 weeks. The Winter semester concludes with final exams and the completion of assignments, usually in April.

Spring Semester (May – August)

The Spring semester usually starts in May and lasts until August. Not all post-secondary institutions offer a full range of courses during the spring/summer, but many do provide opportunities for students to take some classes. The spring/summer term may also include internships, research projects, and other hands-on experiences.

Holidays and Breaks

  • Winter Break: From mid/late December to early January.
  • Reading Week: A week-long break is usually scheduled in the Winter semester, often occurring in February.
  • Summer Break: After the spring/summer semester's completion, students usually have a break until the start of the next academic year in September.

Co-op and Internship Programs

Many Canadian post-secondary institutions offer co-op and internship programs. These programs allow students to gain practical work experience related to their field of study. Co-op programs alternate between academic terms and work terms and can be as short as a semester, or as long as an entire school year.
